Der er nogle biord og adverbielle udtryk, som fortæller os om talerens synspunkt eller holdning til en handling eller som kommenterer en handling. Disse biord er anderledes end andre biord, fordi de ikke fortæller os, hvordan handlingen er foregået. Biord, der udtrykker et synspunkt eller en kommentar modificerer hele ledsætninger i stedet for enkelte udsagnsord, biord eller tillægsord. Der skelnes ikke mellem kommenterende biord og biord, der er udtryk for et synspunkt, bortset fra deres placering i sætningen. Mange biord, der kan bruges til at udtrykke et synspunkt, kan også bruges som kommenterende biord. I nogle tilfælde bliver et biord dog oftere brugt som det ene end det andet.

Placering i sætningen

Biord, der udtrykker et synspunkt, står i starten, eller mere sjældent i slutningen af sætningen. De er ofte adskilt fra resten af sætningen med et komma. Kommenterende biord står før hovedudsagnsordet, medmindre der er tale om udsagnsordet 'to be', i hvilket tilfælde det kan stå både før eller efter udsagnsordet. I nogle tilfælde er det kommenterende biord, der står før hovedudsagnsordet, også adskilt fra resten af sætningen med et komma, selvom det oftest ikke vil være tilfældet. I eksemplerne nedenfor vises biord, der udtrykker et synspunkt eller en holdning, rigtigt placeret i sætningen. Når en sætning er ualmindelig, opstyltet eller for formel til talesprog, er den markeret med en stjerne.
